A pair of local producers say they will stage Stephen Sondheim’s “A Little Night Music” in March at the Gem Theatre in Garden Grove, possibly as a prelude to mounting an eventual season there.

“We’re renting the theater for this first show, and we’re raising the money ourselves,” Beth Hansen said. “We’re also in negotiations with the Gem for a 1994-95 season. If all this works out, we would be an independent company in residence there.”

Hansen would star as Desiree in the musical. She is a partner with George Quick, who would direct, in a small production company called Actors’ Cabaret Ensemble. “A Little Night Music” would run March 25-April 10.

“We’re looking to raise between $35,000 and $50,000 for the show,” Hansen said. Phone calls to the Gem went unanswered Monday. The theater has been largely inoperative since the collapse of its managing company, GroveShakespeare, in June, 1993.
