Obituaries : * Robert R. Nye; Road Builder

Robert R. Nye of Ventura, a longtime Ventura County road builder, died Saturday at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura. He was 75.

Nye, who founded the Robert R. Nye Inc. road construction company in Ventura, received one of the state’s top construction awards in 1988 for his work on the Ojai Valley Trail. He was honored for transforming an abandoned railroad track into a landscaped and well-used bicycle and equestrian trail.

Born in Carrizozo, N. M., Nye moved to Ventura County in 1923 with his parents. He attended Ojai schools and obtained a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering in 1943 at UC Berkeley.

After college, he joined the Naval Construction Battalion and built airstrips in the South Pacific during World War II.

After the war, he worked for several engineering companies in Los Angeles, then founded his own company in 1955. In 1988, he helped his son, Ruric Nye, establish another road construction company, Nye & Nelson Inc. of Ventura, in 1988.

Robert Nye was a charter member and past president of the tri-counties chapter of Associated General Contractors of America and was a state board member. Active in the Rotary Club, he was a Rotary Paul Harris fellow, the highest Rotarian award.

In addition to his son, survivors include his wife, Pilar; daughter Pamela, of Marin County; sister Mary Nye Pierpont of Ojai, and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura.
