BRIEFS : Irwindale OKs Concept for Huge Disney-Style Park

Share

The Irwindale City Council has given thumbs up to an idea for a Disneyland-style theme park in a huge quarry pit that has long been dubbed “The Raider Crater.”

The name refers to a former 70-acre quarry owned by the CalMat excavation company and once considered by the Raiders professional football team as a possible stadium site. Seven years later, the pit, at the intersection of the Foothill (210) Freeway and Irwindale Avenue, remains empty.

Earlier this month, Irvine-based theme park builder Battaglia Associates told city officials it wants to build a $100 million-plus family-oriented entertainment complex in the pit.

Battaglia, which has built theme parks worldwide, wanted the council to approve the concept of building a theme park there before investing about $300,000 on a development proposal. The developer has not asked the city for financial assistance in the project.
