Dave Andreychuk’s league-leading 39th goal got Toronto started, and the Maple Leafs hung on despite being badly outshot to defeat the New York Islanders, 4-3, Wednesday night at Toronto and remain unbeaten in nine games.

Doug Gilmour, Mike Eastwood and Bill Berg also scored for the Maple Leafs, 7-0-2 since a 1-0 loss Jan. 4 to Tampa Bay in Hamilton, Canada.

Steve Thomas had two goals, and Marty McInnis one for the Islanders, who outshot the Maple Leafs, 34-17.

The Islanders lost more than the game. All-Star center Pierre Turgeon broke his right cheekbone when hit by a puck during warm-ups, and was scratched from the lineup.

Coach Al Arbour, speaking after the game, said Turgeon probably will require surgery.

“I think he’ll need an operation to flip (the bone) back out,” Arbour said. “It’s caved in a little bit.”

Turgeon was skating near the sideboards when a puck caromed off the glass and struck him.

Montreal 3, Hartford 0--Patrick Roy stopped 30 shots for his fifth shutout of the season, and Brian Bellows scored twice to lead the Canadiens at Hartford, Conn.

Bellows scored the 400th goal of his career in the second period and added one in the third for Montreal. Mike Keane had a goal in the first period.

The Whalers had outshot Montreal, 12-9, in the first period before the Canadiens converted on their final attempt with 28 seconds to play. Keane took a pass from Kirk Muller and backhanded a shot into the net.

Montreal outshot Hartford, 14-7, in the second period but couldn’t score on Sean Burke until Bellows tallied a wrap-around goal with 50 seconds remaining.

The shutout tied Roy with Dominik Hasek of Buffalo for the league lead. It was also the 25th of Roy’s career.

Florida 1, Tampa Bay 1--John Vanbiesbrouck of the Panthers and Daren Puppa of the Lightning staged a goaltending clinic at Ft. Lauderdale.

Vanbiesbrouck, second in the league in goals-against average at 2.35, stopped 40 Tampa Bay shots.

Puppa, fifth in the league at 2.52, stopped 22 shots, including Stu Barnes from close range early in the overtime.

Andrei Lomakin scored for the first-year Panthers, 4-0-3 in their last seven games. They also finished the season series with a 3-0-2 edge against second-season Tampa Bay, which got its goal from John Tucker.

Vanbiesbrouck stopped Tim Bergland and Rob DiMaio from close range midway through the first period.
