Ray Sheppard scored 51 seconds into overtime Thursday night to give the Detroit Red Wings a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks at Chicago.

The Red Wings, 5-0 losers to the Blackhawks and Ed Belfour at Detroit on Tuesday night, got the game-winner when Keith Primeau fed Sheppard and the Red Wing forward beat Belfour with a shot from in front.

“It was a case of getting a tremendous pass from Keith,” Sheppard said of his winning goal. “Eddie (Belfour) was kind of leaning to his left, and I just lifted the puck up and it made it.”

The Red Wings set a club record with their sixth consecutive road victory.

Detroit had won five consecutive road games five previous times, the last from March 20-April 8, 1993. The Red Wings extended their unbeaten road string to nine, marking the first since 1970 they had as many consecutive road games without a loss.

Buffalo 7, Washington 2--Jim Schoenfeld came up a loser at Buffalo, N.Y., in his debut as coach of the Capitals.

Schoenfeld replaced the fired Terry Murray only hours before the game, but the change didn’t prevent the Capitals’ fourth consecutive loss.

Ottawa 1, Hartford 1--Ottawa’s Scott Levins and Hartford’s James Patrick scored power-play goals in the first period, then the Senators and Whalers played more than 45 scoreless minutes at Ottawa.

Ottawa goaltender Craig Billington handled 29 shots, including a stop on Robert Kron midway through the third period.

Jeff Reese of the Whalers stopped 27 shots in his ninth start of the season.

The tie left the Whalers winless in eight games.

Pittsburgh 3, Quebec 0--Ken Wregget stopped 38 shots at Pittsburgh for his first shutout in nearly six years.

Wregget, 29, has three shutouts in 374 NHL games. The other two came in 1987-88, when he played for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The most recent was Feb. 19, 1988, when he made 32 saves in a 5-0 victory over Vancouver.

Dallas 3, Vancouver 2--Dave Gagner’s goal 3:36 into overtime lifted the Stars at Vancouver.
