Quake Facts : Damage Report

Here are some facts and figures on the aftermath of last week’s magnitude 6.6 earthquake:

* DEATHS: 57 (state estimate)

* INJURIES: More than 7,705 people have been treated and released at hospitals; about 692 were admitted for care.

* AFTERSHOCKS: A magnitude 4.0 aftershock centered three miles east-southeast of Newhall occurred at 12:09 p.m., followed three minutes later by a 3.5 temblor and by a 3.0 tremor at 4:47 p.m.

* DAMAGE: More than 28,557 buildings had been inspected. Officials have declared 6,646 buildings, including 21,095 dwelling units, at least partially unsafe.

* ARRESTS: Since the quake, the Los Angeles Police Department has taken 427 people into custody. On a typical day, there are about 530 arrests in the city.

* HOMELESS: More than 3,000 remain in shelters.

* NATIONAL GUARD: About 575 remain on duty, of which 108 bilingual Guard troops are acting as translators.

* UTILITIES: About 15,000 Department of Water and Power customers must continue boiling tap water for drinking purposes in Granada Hills. Southern California Gas Co. customers must make arrangements with neighbors or have someone meet gas company personnel to get into their homes. All gas company employees carry official identification. Approximately 150,000 homes, apartments and businesses lost gas service after the Jan. 17 Northridge earthquake and aftershocks.

* TRANSIT: A commuter hot line, (800) 286-RIDE, has been set up to provide information on car pools, road closures and other information. Metrolink will open the Vincent Grade/Acton station Monday, the fourth station on the Antelope Valley Emergency extension from Santa Clarita. The station is off the Antelope Freeway (California 14) on Sierra Highway, south of the Sierra Highway and Angeles Forest Highway intersection. The station will have 500 free parking spaces. The two-lane connector from California 14 to Interstate 5 reopened Friday, after crews finished clearing debris from the road. The two-mile Interstate 5 bypass will take traffic around the collapsed Gavin Canyon bridge.

* DUMP: The city of Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation will open the Lopez Canyon landfill in Lake View Terrace this weekend to all city residents for disposal of earthquake-related material at no charge. The landfill will be open today and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
