Gaetan Duchesne’s goal at 1:01 of the third period gave the San Jose Sharks a 2-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night before 26,652 at St. Petersburg, Fla., the second-largest crowd in NHL history.

The record of 27,227 was set in the Lightning’s home opener on Oct. 9, a 2-0 loss to the Florida Panthers.

Duchesne skated down the slot and knocked home a loose puck after Roman Hamrlik of the Lightning slid to break up a two-on-one rush by the Sharks.

The victory extended the Sharks’ road unbeaten streak to five.

Detroit 7, Winnipeg 1--Ray Sheppard scored three goals at Detroit for his fifth career hat trick.

Sheppard netted his 31st, 32nd and 33rd goals and added an assist for the Red Wings, who are 11-2-3 in their last 16 games.

Sergei Fedorov, second in the NHL with 80 points, scored his 33rd goal and set up two third-period goals by Vyacheslav Kozlov. Martin Lapointe also scored for Detroit, which got three assists from Paul Coffey and two from Steve Chiasson.

Washington 4, Philadelphia 2--Sylvain Cote scored the go-ahead goal with 1:44 to play at Philadelphia, helping Capital Coach Jim Shoenfeld even his record at 1-1. Schoenfeld replaced the fired Terry Murray on Thursday night.

Eric Lindros, who has seven goals and eight assists in his last seven games, scored twice for Philadelphia.

Quebec 3, Hartford 2--Curtis Leschyshyn scored the go-ahead goal at 7:06 of the third period at Hartford, Conn., to help the Nordiques end a five-game road losing streak.

Alexei Gusarov and Mike McKee scored in the first period for Quebec, which was outshot, 28-23, while winning for only the third time in 10 games.

Buffalo 3, Montreal 2--The line of Dale Hawerchuk, Brad May and Donald Audette had a hand in all three Sabre goals at Montreal. Hawerchuk and May each had a goal and two assists, and Audette had two assists. Hawerchuk and May set up Richard Smehlik for the third goal.

Vancouver 6, New Jersey 3--Pavel Bure scored two goals to lead the Canucks at Vancouver. Bure was slowed earlier in the season by injury, sitting out eight games, but has picked up his production since the All-Star break. He had four goals and nine points in four games last week.

Boston 2, New York Islanders 1--Bryan Smolinski tipped in Don Sweeney’s slap shot from the blue line midway through the third period to lift the Bruins at Boston.

The victory was the fourth in a row for the Bruins, whose goaltending duo of Jon Casey and Vincent Riendeau has given up only three goals in that four-game span. Riendeau, acquired from Detroit for a conditional draft choice Jan. 17, won his second start.

Dallas 5, Edmonton 3--Brent Gilchrist’s third-period goal helped the Stars win at Edmonton.

Gilchrist jumped on a loose puck in the Oilers’ zone at 7:24 of the third period and tucked a backhand shot high into the net over a falling Bill Ranford.

St. Louis 5, Calgary 3--Brett Hull scored two goals at Calgary. Steve Duchesne, Brendan Shanahan and Philippe Bozon also scored for the Blues, who headed home for nine games with a four-game unbeaten streak.

Toronto 4, Pittsburgh 4--Light-scoring Bill Berg scored two goals at Toronto for the Maple Leafs, who are unbeaten in 10 games.

Berg had only three goals in 50 previous games this season in a mainly defensive role. He has 33 NHL goals in 263 games.

Ottawa 3, Chicago 3--Defenseman Kerry Huffman’s first goal of the season--at 5:56 of the third period--helped the lowly Senators earn a rare road point at Chicago.

Despite the tie, the Senators’ road winless streak reached 13 games.
