Weekend Box Office : ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ Still the Champ

There’s no stopping “Mrs. Doubtfire.” The Robin Williams comedy with a huge $172.5-million gross is now the third-highest-grossing movie released in 1993, after only “Jurassic Park” ($342 million) and “The Fugitive” ($179.4 million). At the current pace of ticket sales, “Doubtfire” will catch “The Fugitive” by the week’s end.

Meanwhile, “The Pelican Brief,” with Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington, is rewriting the 1993 Top 10 list, too. With $90.3 million, it is now 1993’s eighth-highest-grossing release, pushing “Cliffhanger,” with $84 million, to ninth.

* Some movies based on TV series work. Others don’t. ‘Car 54, Where Are You?” opened Friday and seems to have gotten lost. Its per-screen average doesn’t bode well.
