COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Missouri Upsets Kansas, Takes Lead in Big Eight

No. 3 Kansas shot only 43% and had 17 turnovers in losing to No. 20 Missouri, 79-67, Monday night in a Big Eight game at Columbia, Mo.

Melvin Booker led a balanced Missouri attack with 16 points, scoring all but two in the second half.

The Tigers (15-2, 6-0) ended a six-game losing streak against the Jayhawks and took a two-game lead in the conference over Kansas (19-3, 4-2).

The Jayhawks have won the Big Eight regular-season championship the last three seasons.

Steve Woodberry scored 19 points for Kansas, which lost for the second time in five games.

Missouri has held its last 11 opponents to sub-50% shooting.

Booker, Missouri’s leading scorer with an 18.2-point average, missed all six of his shots in the first half. But in the second, he had three baskets and was six of seven at the free throw line.

Kelly Thames and Jevon Crudup each added 14 points for Missouri. Lamont Frazier and Paul O’Liney had 13 apiece.

OTHER GAMES

Arturas Karnishovas made a three-point basket with 5.8 seconds left in overtime and Seton Hall (11-7, 4-6) overcame a second-half cold spell to record a 64-63 Big East victory over Providence (11-6, 4-5) at East Rutherford, N.J. Seton Hall made only eight baskets in the final 30 minutes but still avenged an earlier 24-point loss at Providence. . . . Malcolm Huckaby and Bill Curley keyed a 7-0 run as Boston College (16-5, 7-3) pulled away to a 71-64 Big East victory over Georgetown (11-6, 5-4) at Boston. Othella Harrington led the Hoyas with 22 points. . . . Damon Key scored 15 points and Marquette (13-5) shut down South Florida (9-9) for a 78-54 victory at Milwaukee.
