An argument between six men in a tattoo parlor escalated into a shooting that killed two of them, including a tattoo artist, and seriously injured a third, authorities said.

About 2:30 p.m. Monday, three men entered Tattoo Land on Amar Road and started to argue with tattoo artist Nicholas Marquez, 43, Stephen Perez, 30, and an unidentified 38-year-old man who was in the store, said Sgt. Bob Olmsted of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. A short time later, three gunmen opened fire, Olmsted said.

Marquez and the 38-year-old man were shot in the upper body and died at the scene, the spokesman said. Perez was shot in the lower body and ran to a nearby shoe store to call for help, Olmsted said. Perez was taken to Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina, where he underwent surgery. He was in serious but stable condition today, said nursing supervisor Richardson Alyce.

The third man’s identity was being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin, Olmsted said. Investigators do not know if the men knew each other and have not determined a motive, Olmsted said.
