Drug Dispute Linked to Man’s Slaying

A 24-year-old man was fatally wounded Tuesday in what police said was a drug dispute.

Jose Marin Miranda of Santa Ana was shot in the chest just before 2 a.m. in the 500 block of North Broadway, Lt. Bob Chavez said.

Police officers responding to reports of gunfire found Miranda lying in the street, being treated by paramedics. He was unable to speak, and was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where he died about 1 p.m.

A witness, who was with Miranda at the time of the shooting, told police they were approached by three men in their early 20s who demanded $20 for drugs, possibly crack cocaine, previously sold to Miranda. The victim said he had no money, Chavez said, and refused to be searched by the suspects.

When Miranda and the witness fled, one of the three men fired once with a handgun, Chavez said.
