PARAMOUNT : Shift in Election Dates Extends Council Terms
- Share via
The City Council voted this week to rearrange the dates of local elections, paving the way for some members to remain in office nearly an extra year.
The council voted to move local spring elections from even years to odd years to avoid a conflict with the California presidential primary, which has been shifted from June to March by the Legislature.
The April, 1996, city election will be moved to March, 1997, which means the terms of council members Esther Corona Caldwell and Gerald A. Mulrooney will be extended another 11 months. And whoever wins the three seats in this April’s election will serve until 1999 instead of 1998.
The changes were approved by a 4-0 vote. Councilwoman Elvira Oropeza was absent.
