Olson Closes the Door on Angels

Share

Free-agent reliever Gregg Olson, who the Angels had hoped would be their closer the next four seasons, has decided to sign elsewhere, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.

“We’re moving toward a deal,” agent Jeff Moorad said. “But I’m still not sure where the deal will end up, or with what team.

“Our talks with the Angels progress nicely, but Gregg and I felt it was appropriate to explore other opportunities. The Angels were very sincere and professional in their negotiations.”

Olson, who has saved at least 27 games in each of the last five seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, is expected to sign with the Toronto Blue Jays, or possibly the New York Yankees by this weekend.

The Angels are expected to use a bullpen-by-committee this season, led by Mike Butcher, who saved eight games last season.

In other news, the Angels signed starter John Dopson to a triple-A contract and will invite him to spring training. Dopson, who was 7-11 with a 4.97 ERA last season with the Boston Red Sox, will join Russ Springer, Hilly Hathaway and John Farrell as candidates for the fifth starter’s spot. He has a 29-43 career record with a 4.10 earned-run average.

The Angels also signed left-hander Mark Holzemer to a contract Wednesday that will pay him $112,500 if he makes the major league team. Holzemer was 9-6 with a 4.82 ERA in 24 games (23 starts) with triple-A Vancouver last season before being recalled Aug. 20 to the Angels.
