City of Hope Starts Year Receiving $14 Million

City of Hope kicked off the New Year with contributions of more than $14 million from support chapters throughout Southern California. The gifts were announced on Jan. 16 at the Beverly Hilton. Funds will go toward the medical center’s annual operating budget of $463 million for patient care, scientific research and medical education.

Hillsides Home for Children’s Guild raised $5,000 at its Dec. 16 holiday party at the Parkway Grill in Pasadena. Proceeds will go toward Hillsides’ “Adopt-a-Cottage” renovation program.

Orthopaedic Hospital’s Lowman Outpatient Center Clinics will receive $68,000 raised at a Jan. 20 benefit at the Biltmore. The gala honored William Burke, founder of the Los Angeles Marathon. Included among the 600 guests were Cicely Tyson, Marla Gibbs, and Al and Florence Griffith Joyner.

Concern Foundation for Cancer Research has announced research grants totaling $147,620 for four projects in cancer immunology. The foundation, now in its 25th year, has raised in excess of $12 million for research.

Good Samaritan Hospital announced receipt of a $50,000 check from the Hospital Auxiliary for its Day Care Center Project.

University of Judaism’s Jack M. and Bel Ostrow Library received $850,000, proceeds of a benefit gala Jan. 27 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire.

The Women’s Guild of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center raised $400,000 at its Jan. 14 gala at Paramount Pictures in Hollywood. More than 800 guests attended the benefit premiere of “Intersection” and dinner. The funds will provide research, patient care and educational projects at the hospital.

Eaton Canyon Nature Center, Hillsides Home for Children, the Wellness Community and Planned Parenthood, Pasadena, are among the agencies sharing a $312,000 grant from the Pasadena Foundation, Pasadena’s community trust.

Los Angeles Music Center Opera raised $110,000 at its Jan. 19 opening night performance of “El Gato Montes.” The black-tie gala at the Music Center was sponsored by Merrill Lynch & Co. Ruth and Ed Shannon were co-chairs.

Oralingua School for the Hearing Impaired in Whittier, announced receipt of $2,000 from American Savings Bank’s Charitable Contributions Foundation. The gift will benefit the school’s literacy and creative writing programs.
