SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Roosevelt striker Vicente Mejia missed a second-half penalty kick against Garfield on Wednesday, and the Bulldogs held on to a 1-0 win in an Eastern League game.

After a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs opened the second by quickly penetrating Roughrider territory. Within two minutes, Julio Cesar Munoz scored on a rebound.

Garfield dominated most of the game, keeping pressure in the midfield and escaping the offsides trap to set up plays in front of the goal. The Bulldogs nearly scored again when striker Ivan Valente beat Roosevelt goalie Agustin Lopez from the right flank and sliced the ball between two defenders toward forward Romeo Cordova. But when Cordova slid to put the ball in, he knocked it out instead.

Bell 8, Locke 0--Oswaldo Williams’ hat trick gave the Eagles a 5-0 lead before the end of first half in a Central League match at Bell.

The Eagles scored three goals against the Saint defense in the first 15 minutes of the game. Ernesto Serratos opened the scoring on a breakaway. Williams followed with two more tallies, assisted Luis Castillo on the fourth and then scored the fifth goal.

The Eagles have scored 25 goals and have three against them in six games.

South Gate 3, Fremont 2--Riddled with yellow cards and ejections, the Rams nearly threw away their victory when the Pathfinders came back from a 3-0 deficit in the final minutes of Central League action.

Carlos Osorio scored twice and Eric Salazar tallied once for the Rams, seemingly securing their team’s third consecutive victory.

One player from each side was ejected at the end of the first half for unsportsmanlike conduct. When the Rams lost another player to accumulated yellow cards late in the second half, Fremont made good on its one-man advantage.
