SIGNAL HILL : 2 Suspects Arrested in Carjacking Attempt

The two carjackers approached the 49-year-old woman in the parking garage, demanded her keys and purse, and prepared to drive off in her car.

That’s when their planned heist began to unravel last Thursday. They didn’t have a remote control to open the parking garage gate.

“They couldn’t find the control and started to panic,” said David M. Singer, deputy police chief. The men ran through the condominium complex in the 2100 block of Hill Street, and across a dirt field, Singer said.

Police arrested two men at 20th Street and Raymond Avenue. One suspect, Carlton Lee Vereen, 18, of Long Beach was charged with carjacking, robbery, burglary, assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a stolen handgun. The other suspect, a 17-year-old whose name was not released because of his age, is being held while authorities determine if he can be tried as an adult, Singer said.
