LOS ANGELES : Council to Set Up Panel to Improve Race Relations

Share

Acknowledging the city’s ethnic diversity and the tensions that stem from it, the Los Angeles City Council has voted to expand its Human Relations Commission and set up a special committee to study ways of improving race relations.

Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas, who proposed the measure, said the blue-ribbon committee on race relations will work to highlight the city’s diverse communities and to prevent conflicts.

Ridley-Thomas called the city’s existing Human Relations Commission woefully inadequate, noting that it has only two full-time staffers and a budget of $100,000.
