The Scottish guitar quartet Teenage Fanclub had a lot to live up to with the release of its third album, “Thirteen.”
Spin magazine called the group’s previous release, “Bandwagonesque,” the “best album made by white people in 10 years,” and it earned a slew of accolades from music press all over the world.
Fortunately, Teenage Fanclub has managed to deliver the type of perfect guitar-pop record that is certain to last for years.
Mixing influences of the Byrds and Neil Young with the spirit of flowing guitar aggression seen in more modern bands such as Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth, “Thirteen” combines sparkling melodies and simple pop-song lyrics with fuzzed-out basses and over-driven guitar tracks that move with roaring intensity.
Songs such as “Hand On,” Radio” and “Gene Clark” all have the warm, timeless quality and instantly catchy melodies that recall bouncing around one’s room to giddy pop love songs.
With the record, Teenage Fanclub has edged one step closer to becoming the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young of our generation.
