Library Plans to Launch Adult Literacy Program With Grant
The Beverly Hills Public Library will launch an adult reading program next month through a recently awarded $71,000 state grant.
Free tutoring for Beverly Hills residents and employees who want to learn to read or improve their reading skills will be provided by volunteers at the library.
“Even in educated and wealthy areas such as Beverly Hills, there are people who have fallen through the cracks and cannot read,” said library director Michael Steinfeld.
Literacy project director Aritha Russell, who established a similar literacy program for the El Segundo Public Library, said her first priority will be to train about 30 volunteer tutors. The library anticipates about 75 students for the classes, which are expected to begin by the end of March.
The first three years of the program will be financed with state money and then the next two years by a combination of state and private funding, Steinfeld said.
