CAMARILLO : Council OKs Plan for 11-Screen Theater
The Camarillo City Council has given final approval to a controversial proposal to build an 11-screen United Artist theater complex near the corner of Camino Ruiz and Verdugo Way on the city’s eastside.
The council voted 3 to 1 in favor of the 2,629-seat complex during its meeting Wednesday. The decision followed a review by the city’s Planning Commission, which was asked by the council to examine city-imposed conditions related to parking at the site.
The council tentatively approved the project during its Jan. 12 meeting, subject to the Planning Commission review.
Camarillo Mayor Ken Gose cast the dissenting vote. Councilman Stan Daily was absent from the meeting.
Gose said he could not support the proposal in part because of a watered-down condition relating to the city’s ability to control parking at the site.
During the first approval of the project in January, dozens of homeowners from a nearby housing tract opposed the proposed theater, citing concerns about the potential for more noise, traffic and crime.
The homeowners have hired an attorney and have vowed to file a lawsuit in order to stop the development.
