TUSTIN : City Chooses Firm to Build Sports Park

Share

The City Council this week picked E. A. Mendoza Contractors to build the Tustin Sports Park on 20 acres of city-owned land in East Tustin.

The Buena Park-based contractor’s winning bid of $2.6 million was well below the city engineers’ estimate of $3.3 million, officials said. The city has already set aside $2.6 million for construction of the park and such expenses as architectural and permit fees.

Nine other construction companies submitted bids much lower than city estimates, apparently because of the slumping construction industry, and that allowed the city to get a favorable contract, officials said.

The Tustin Sports Park will be the biggest recreational facility in the city. It will have three lighted softball fields, six lighted tennis courts, restrooms, locker rooms, a pro shop and a concession area where food will be sold.

In addition, there will be a picnic area, playground, a multipurpose field, basketball courts and parking for 200 cars.

Expected to be completed in the spring of 1995, it will be open to all residents, although a majority of the users are expected to come from the Tustin Ranch community. The Tustin Unified School District is also planning to build a new elementary school close to the park.

The city is coordinating with the school district to make sure that the designs of the park and the school blend, officials said.
