NHL ROUNDUP : Detroit at Best When Weakest

From Associated Press

The Detroit Red Wings were most effective when they had fewer players on the ice.

Not that that’s anything new.

The Red Wings scored three short-handed goals in a 6-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers at Detroit.

That Steve Yzerman had one of the three also isn’t anything new.

Detroit has scored three short-handed goals in a game three times in franchise history, and Yzerman scored one of the goals in each.

Flyer Coach Terry Simpson was shaking his head over his team’s powerless power play.

“If they would have let us decline penalties, we would have been even with them,” he said. “We were just too slow at moving the puck and too slow coming up the ice. I don’t know why we were so vulnerable, but we were.”

Yzerman finished with two goals and an assist against Philadelphia, which is 1-7-1 in its last nine games.

His assist came on a goal by Ray Sheppard, his 40th of the season. Sheppard assisted on both Yzerman goals.

Buffalo 5, Montreal 1--Alexander Mogilny scored two goals at Buffalo as the Sabres snapped Montreal’s six-game winning streak.

Mogilny, who had been sidelined four games because of an ankle injury, scored his 22nd and 23rd goals of the season. Richard Smehlik assisted on three goals.

Buffalo has lost only once and allowed only 12 goals in its last six games.

Toronto 3, Winnipeg 1--Dave Andreychuk scored short-handed midway through the second period to help the Maple Leafs snap a winless streak at four games and stay two points ahead of Detroit in the Central Division.

Winnipeg is 0-10-2 in its last 12 games and has scored only 17 goals in the eight games since Teemu Selanne went down with a season-ending Achilles’ tendon injury in Anaheim.

Calgary 4, Hartford 1--Trent Yawney and Theore Fleury scored second-period goals and Mike Vernon stopped 19 shots for the Flames at home.

German Titov and Gary Roberts also scored for the Flames, who tied a season high with their fifth consecutive victory.

Hartford has won only two of its last 14 games.

San Jose 4, Chicago 3--Sergei Makarov and Todd Elik scored two goals each as the Sharks, behind a career-high three assists from Sandis Ozolinsh, took their second consecutive victory over the Blackhawks at San Jose.

The Sharks and Blackhawks will play for the third time in six days on Sunday at San Jose.

The Sharks, continuing their run for a first playoff spot, have won three in a row and are 8-3-1 in their last 12 games.
