Norway Raises Seal Quota, Cub Seals Still Protected

The fishing ministry increased the quota for harp seal hunting on Friday, but a ban on killing cubs remained in effect.
Norwegian sealers in the western zone will be allowed to hunt 10,600 harp seals this year, an increase of 2,100 seals over last year, the ministry said. The zone quota of 1,700 hooded seals was unchanged.
On the east coast and the adjacent zone near Russia, the quota stayed at 9,500 harp seals, Permanent Secretary Gunnar Kjonnoy said.
