A 16-year-old Santa Ana youth who ignored a friend’s warning about playing with a loaded weapon died Saturday after accidentally shooting himself in the head, police said.

The teen-ager’s name was not released because the victim’s relatives had not yet been notified, said Santa Ana Police Sgt. John Follo.

The shooting took place about 5:45 p.m. at the teen-ager’s home in the 700 block of West Bishop Street.

Follo said the teen-ager was showing off a new gun to a friend, Javier Paramo, 20, of Santa Ana, and jokingly pointing the weapon at his own head when Paramo told him not to play with the weapon. Moments after Paramo left the room, he heard a gunshot and returned to find his friend with a fatal gunshot wound to the head, Follo said.

“It’s a real tragic situation,” Follo said, adding that authorities are investigating the shooting to find out where the youth obtained the weapon. Follo said Paromo’s version of the shooting was confirmed by other witnesses.
