CYPRESS : Schools May Adopt Bicycle Helmet Rule

Share

The Cypress School District is considering adopting a policy requiring students to wear bicycle helmets while riding to and from school.

Under the proposed policy, principals would be required to make sure their students know they must wear helmets, and teachers would be required to teach about bicycle safety.

Board members said they expect to pass the policy unanimously at their meeting on March 8.

Jeannette Lohrman, principal of Arnold Elementary School, said she supports the policy. She told board members last week that a fourth-grade student wearing a helmet escaped major head injuries when his bicycle collided with a car in the rain outside school on Monday.

“It works,” Lohrman said. “Every kid should have a helmet.”

Parent groups are working with administrators to develop scholarship programs to provide helmets for children who cannot afford them, district officials said.
