Randolph Childress scored 22 points in the second half and Wake Forest spoiled Duke’s shot at the No. 1 ranking Sunday with a 78-69 upset of the second-ranked Blue Devils in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Winston-Salem, N.C.

Childress, who finished with 28 points, almost single-handedly helped Wake Forest, 16-7 overall, 6-4 in the ACC, to its first season-series sweep of Duke since 1983.

Duke (17-3, 8-3) was poised to overtake ACC rival North Carolina as the top team in the country after the top-ranked Tar Heels were upset by Georgia Tech on Saturday at Chapel Hill, N.C.

On Jan. 13, with Duke ready to climb over the Tar Heels for No. 1, Childress made a three-point basket to give the Demon Deacons a 69-68 victory. This time, Childress did the bulk of his damage from the free-throw line. He made nine of 10 free throws in the last 3:20.
