A homemade bomb was found Monday outside the Hollywood home of a deputy district attorney assigned to the Van Nuys courts, authorities said.

The Los Angeles Police Department’s bomb squad removed the explosive, described by police as “a functional device.”

It was found by plumbers about 8:30 a.m. at the home of Richard Size, a veteran deputy district attorney, in the 7000 block of Hillside Avenue in the Hollywood Hills, said Detective Steven Spear of the Criminal Conspiracy Division.

The explosive device was found at the edge of the driveway, said Officer Don Cox. The plumbers studied the device for a time before using a car phone to contact police--a dangerous practice with a live bomb, Cox said.

“You get an electrical charge from the wires to the gasoline and boom,” Cox said.

The bomb squad detonated the device, but several pieces were left intact as evidence, authorities said.

No suspects have been arrested and no motive is known, authorities said.
