Tallying the Damage : Analysis Shows Erratic Pattern of Destruction Across Valley

The Northridge earthquake’s destruction in the San Fernando Valley was erratic, sparing buildings in some communities near the epicenter and toppling structures miles away. It caused about $1 billion in structural damage in the Valley, about half the estimated total citywide. Outside of Cal State Northridge, the Valley ZIP code with the highest repair estimates is in Sherman Oaks, according to a Times computer analysis of Los Angeles Dept. of Building and Safety lists of structures determined unsafe or safe for limited use. Why a ZIP code several miles from the epicenter would be hit harder than closer areas is a question facing scientists who will be studying the quake for months or even years to come.
