LYNWOOD : Chavez Reelected to School Board Post

Share

Lynwood Unified school board member Rachel Chavez won a second term this week, defeating board President Joe T. Battle in a special runoff election.

Chavez, 55, a homemaker and the only Latina on the board, outpolled Battle, 403 to 334, for a seat on the five-member board.

Newcomer Laura M. Byrd won a seat in the Nov. 2 election when she emerged as the top vote-getter in the race for two seats, but Battle and Chavez were forced into a runoff when each received 1,281 votes.

Both incumbents continued to serve after the Nov. 2 deadlock, creating a six-member board. Battle, who has served three terms, was not available for comment.

The election garnered little attention among Lynwood voters.
