LONG BEACH : Study on Troublesome Waves at Port Is OKd
Long Beach Harbor commissioners have decided to spend $167,000 to further study a wave problem that has been moving ships around and making it difficult for longshoremen to unload cargo at the city’s newest shipping terminal.
An initial study of the terminal at Pier J has found that to fix the problem it may be necessary to build a breakwater, which would cost $15 to $20 million, according to a report from the Port of Long Beach’s chief engineer.
Port officials began looking into the problem in May after they found that waves, apparently from the south, were moving moored ships several feet and presenting a potential risk to workers.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will study a one-acre model of the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles at the Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg, Miss.
