LOS ANGELES : Father Sues District Over Shooting of Son at School

Charging that the Los Angeles Unified School District failed to provide adequate supervision and security for his children, the father of a Dorsey High School student who was shot on the first day of school sued the district for $5 million Wednesday.

The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court by attorney Melanie Lomax, alleges that the 15-year-old boy was shot and critically wounded while waiting in an unsupervised registration area at Dorsey in September. An 18-year-old gang member, who did not attend Dorsey, has been arraigned on attempted murder charges and is awaiting trial. Glenn Browne, the victim’s father, said the school should have provided better supervision and metal detectors.

School district officials said they believe the campuses are safe and that the shooting did not indicate a lack of school supervision. The district believes it has no liability in the case, officials said.
