BEVERLY HILLS: South Beverly Drive shoppers will get valet parking courtesy of the city until a city-owned parking structure damaged in the Jan. 17 earthquake is repaired.

The 240-space parking facility at 216 S. Beverly Drive will require about $1 million in repairs, which may take up to five months to complete, City Manager Mark Scott said.

Losing that much parking for so long will have a “huge impact on businesses on South Beverly Drive,” Scott said.

The City Council on Tuesday approved a plan under which the city will pay about $5,000 per month for a valet company to park as many as 350 vehicles per day in the 200 blocks of El Camino and Reeves drives. The Chamber of Commerce and the Southwest Homeowners Assn. approved the plan.

The city plans to seek partial reimbursement of the costs from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Scott said.

The city has agreed to pay $510,000 for a small parcel owned by the Beverly Hills Land Corp.

The 12,000-square-foot lot is on 3rd Street between Maple Drive and Foothill Road, City Manager Mark Scott said.

The city has been looking into acquiring additional land in the so-called industrial area near the Civic Center.

The purchase is contingent upon an environmental review of the property to verify there is no hazardous waste. The city already owns nine acres of developable land in the same area, intended for such municipal uses as a community center.
