A 4-year-old boy who disappeared a week ago from his foster home in Rancho Santa Margarita was found Friday with his biological parents, who were arrested on suspicion of child abduction.

Taj Yaser Jayyusi was discovered by sheriff’s deputies about 6:45 p.m. Friday in a car parked in front of a building at the corner of Studebaker Street and Alondra Avenue in Cerritos where his father, Yaser Majed Jayyusi, 55, had gone to pick up a paycheck. Also in the car was the boy’s mother, Deborah Ann Jayyusi, 35.

Both parents were taken to the Orange County Jail, where they were being held charges of child abduction. Bail was set at $250,000 apiece.

“The arrest happened without incident,” said Lt. Dan Martini. “We can report that the boy is in good health and good spirits. He was obviously a little shaken over the arrest situation, but he was calmed down very quickly and seemed to adapt to the officers at the scene. He seems to be doing very well.”

Martini said that the boy had been taken to Orangewood, a home in Orange for abused or abandoned children, and eventually would be released to the custody of his foster mother, Susan White, although Martini could not say exactly when that would happen.

The case made headlines earlier this week when Taj disappeared from White’s home, where he had lived since August after being removed from the custody of his parents two years ago. While officials would not discuss the reasons for the boy’s removal, a court hearing to terminate their parental rights had been scheduled for last Wednesday and White, 43, already had begun adoption proceedings.

Because the parents moved from their Anaheim home about the time Taj disappeared and because the father is a Jordanian national, deputies initially feared that the boy had been taken out of the country. Those fears were eased somewhat when the youngster was sighted on Wednesday with the Jayyusis in Anaheim.

White’s friends and neighbors, who earlier in the week had crowded into her two-bedroom condominium with food, condolences and offers of help, reacted Friday with excitement to the news that boy had been found.

“This abduction was quite traumatic for the entire community,” said Diane Gaynor, director of public relations for the Santa Margarita Co., which had aided in the search.

A candlelight vigil scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday at the Santa Margarita Beach Club, she said, will now be turned into a celebration.

Late Friday night, White was reported to be en route to Orangewood to retrieve the little boy. And even normally stoic sheriff’s deputies sounded happy.

“It’s a real happy ending before this long weekend,” Martini said. “We’re thrilled.”
