LONG QUIET HIGHWAY by Natalie Goldberg (Bantam New Age: $10.95; 238 pp.). The author of “Writing Down the Bones” traces her study of Zen Buddhism and its relation to writing as practice. Goldberg avoids the touchy-feely cliches that usually creep into American accounts of Zen training and emphasizes the need for self-discipline. Her pleasantly low-key journal reminds the reader that there is no single path to self-discovery.
