Intense Rivalry in Notebook Computers Heats Up: Competition in the fastest-growing sector of the personal computer industry intensified this week with Dell Computer Corp. unveiling its long-awaited notebook computer and IBM slashing prices on its sub-notebooks. Dell has revamped its notebook line and hired AST Research Inc. to make the portables under the Dell label. Wall Street applauded the move by the mail-order computer firm, sending Dell’s stock up $1.75 to close at $22.75 in active Nasdaq trading. The Austin, Tex.-based firm’s new Latitude line of machines, which weigh 5.75 to 6.4 pounds, are priced from $1,699 to $3,249. Meanwhile, IBM cut prices of its ThinkPad 500 sub-notebook by up to 20%.
