Community News : AVALON : Recreation Program Planned for Youths

Share

A recreation program designed to help keep Catalina Island teen-agers out of trouble is being planned for Avalon’s Tremont Hall.

The Santa Catalina Company recently offered to let the city of Avalon use the building at no charge.

The City Council has applied for a $40,000 grant from the Los Angeles County Regional Park District to renovate the hall and establish the program for at-risk youths.

Because there are few recreational activities in Avalon, nearly all of the island’s 700 youths are “at risk,” said Anni Marshall, community services director.

Teen-agers “will get into drugs and alcohol because there’s not much to do,” said Councilwoman Barbara J. Doutt.

The program will offer such classes as self-defense, ballet and acting.
