Judge Rules in Favor of Auditor Candidate

City Auditor candidate Willy Molnar has survived a legal effort to remove his name from the ballot.

A Superior Court judge has ruled that Molnar is qualified for the position. Former City Auditor Robert Fronke, who supports the only other auditor candidate, incumbent Gary L. Burroughs, had sued to keep Molnar’s name off the ballot last month, alleging that Molnar failed to meet a city requirement that the auditor be licensed as a certified public accountant for five years.

Molnar received his CPA certificate in 1987 in Michigan, but moved to California two years later and did not become licensed in this state until late last year. Judge Diane Wayne ruled that Molnar became a CPA more than five years ago.

“It (the court hearing) was over in five minutes,” Molnar said. “I feel totally vindicated.”

Fronke said he still doesn’t believe Molnar has the required experience. “Somebody could get a certificate and go work on a farm--that’s not CPA experience,” he said.
