RAM NOTES : Rams Move Training Camp to UC Irvine

The Rams will move their training camp from Cal State Fullerton to UC Irvine this summer, according to university and team officials.

Steve Novak, general counsel for the Rams, said Thursday that an agreement has been reached with UCI, and a contract is expected to be signed within a week or so.

The Rams trained at Fullerton throughout the 1980s, but when construction of Fullerton’s Titan Sports Complex began in the fall of 1990, the team moved its camp, which runs from mid-July to mid-August, to Irvine for 1991 and ’92. The Rams returned to Fullerton last summer but were not happy with all of their accommodations.

“The facility at Fullerton is fine, but the whole arrangement at the University Village dorms was not a positive,” Novak said.

Novak and Ed Carroll, UCI’s associate athletic director for financial affairs, declined to discuss financial terms of the deal, but it’s expected to be a boon to Irvine.

“There’s the publicity value of having them here, but we rent facilities all the time to generate revenue,” Carroll said. “They pay for facility use, housing, food service, parking . . . it’s a good chunk of change.”
