George Tames, 75, who photographed 11 presidents over half a century as a news photographer. Tames, who was based in Washington for the New York Times, chronicled his career in a 1990 book, “Eye on Washington: Presidents Who Have Known Me.” His last assignment was Sunday, when he photographed Secretary of State Warren Christopher appearing on a television interview program. Tames used wit and charm to get appropriate reactions from Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George Bush and Bill Clinton. On Wednesday in Washington during heart surgery.
