NBA ROUNDUP : Mighty Have Fallen: Celtics Lose No. 11

The Boston Celtics set a franchise record in 1949 with 10 consecutive losses.

Then they got Red Auerbach to coach, a lineage from Bob Cousy and Bill Russell to Larry Bird. The team won 16 NBA championships.

But they’re all gone, Auerbach and the players, and what’s left broke the 1949 record Friday, losing their 11th in a row, 115-102, to the Seattle SuperSonics, who got 25 points from Kendall Gill.

Next in view for the Celtics: the Lakers, Sunday at the Forum in a matchup of old tormentors on hard times.

“The guys are working as hard as they can,” Boston Coach Chris Ford said. “We just don’t have the talent.”

Shawn Kemp had 23 points and 13 rebounds and Detlef Schrempf scored a season-high 23 points for the SuperSonics.

Xavier McDaniel scored 21 points and Rick Fox 17 for the Celtics, who scored 100 points for the first time in the losing streak.

“The team is very aware of the streak,” said Robert Parish, the last holdover from the good old days. “But it’s something we shouldn’t dwell on. We’ve just got to go out and play hard. Otherwise, we’ll get a loss for sure.”

Denver 102, New York 94--Mahmound Abdul-Rauf scored 28 points and the Nuggets overcame Patrick Ewing’s 35-point performance at Denver. The victory was the fifth in six games for Denver, while the Knicks suffered their third consecutive defeat and their fifth loss in seven games.

Utah 107, Phoenix 87--Jay Humphries, starting in place of the traded Jeff Malone, scored 23 points at Salt Lake City and the Jazz beat Phoenix for the first time in three tries this season.

Indiana 110, Detroit 90--Rik Smits had 25 points and 10 rebounds at Indianapolis for his third consecutive double-double in leading the Pacers, who have won seven in a row at home, 11 of their last 13.

Detroit lost its third in four outings and 26th in its last 32.

Orlando 114, New Jersey 102--Nick Anderson scored 28 points and Dennis Scott 23 at Orlando in the Magic’s franchise-record sixth consecutive victory.

Kenny Anderson had 33 points and 12 assists and Derrick Coleman, who signed a five-year, $37.5-million contract earlier in the day, added 23 points and nine rebounds for the Nets.

Atlanta 111, Milwaukee 100--With newest acquisition Danny Manning in street clothes on the bench, Duane Ferrell, starting in place of the traded Dominique Wilkins, scored 20 points and Kevin Willis scored 17 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter at Atlanta.

Willis, who also grabbed 13 rebounds, made eight of nine shots in the final period.

Cleveland 107, Golden State 97--Bobby Phills scored a career-high 26 points and Tyrone Hill, filling in for the injured Larry Nance, had 21 points and 17 rebounds for the Cavaliers at Richfield, Ohio.

The Warriors lost Billy Owens when he aggravated his sprained right shoulder early in the third quarter. They have lost two in a row since their six-game winning streak and a report in the San Jose Mercury News said Friday that the relationship between Chris Webber and Coach Don Nelson has gotten so bad that Webber may try to leave the team after this season.

Chicago 116, Washington 94--Horace Grant had 26 points and 13 rebounds for the Bulls at Landover, Md., in dealing the Bullets their fifth loss in a row, 12th in their last 14 games.

Miami 115, Philadelphia 84--Glen Rice scored 25 points and Steve Smith 21 at Philadelphia as the Heat handed the 76ers their eighth consecutive loss, longest losing streak for the team since it dropped 13 in a row during the 1972-73 season.
