Funeral services are pending for William A. Wittman Jr., a well-known attorney who died last week of injuries suffered in an accidental fall in Puerto Vallarta. He was 60.

A longtime resident of Newport Beach, Wittman graduated from Newport Harbor High School, where he was student body president and played varsity football and competed on the varsity track team. At Pomona College, where he studied pre-law, he was a starter on two conference championship football teams and was president of Kappa Delta fraternity.

After graduation, he served several years in the U.S. Army as a first lieutenant. He graduated from Stanford University law school, and moved back to the Newport Beach area in 1962 and began his law practice.

Wittman was involved in many community activities, including the Newport Harbor Exchange Club, where he was a past president, Newport Beach Athletic Club, Newport Beach Tennis Club, Newport Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce and Orange County Bar Assn.

He is survived by his father, William Wittman Sr., four children, Christine McBride, Kelly Wittman, Laurie McCracken and William Wittman; two brothers, Steve and Randy Wittman; one sister, Barbara Wittman Searles; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services are being arranged by Pacific View Memorial Park in Newport Beach. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made to the Newport Harbor Exchange Club’s child-abuse-prevention program and to the Newport Harbor High School football program.
