JIM WHO? Whatever did happen to Jim Malkin, the all-time leading basketball scorer at CSUN? Did he make the NBA? Did he star in Europe? Negative. Malkin’s hoop exploits didn’t leave the Valley. Instead, he became a coach and administrator, and these days teaches English at Simi High in Simi Valley. . . . Tonight, playing his last game, Andre Chevalier needs 29 points to break Malkin’s 32-year-old record. (C10)

NOBODY’S PERFECT: All the great dynasties of yesteryear--the Celtics, Yankees, UCLA--couldn’t win every big game. And now it’s happened to the Chatsworth High girls’ soccer team that, until Wednesday, had won championships every year since matches began in 1989. . . . Chatsworth was beaten 2-1 by San Pedro in overtime. (C12)

WINTER HEAT: Ron Hammer is no dummy. In November, he moved from Toronto to Canoga Park. Sure, he’s had to endure the quake, but the last few days have demonstrated why so many make a similar voyage. . . . On Wednesday, Hammer (above), a minister of the Los Angeles Church of Christ, enjoyed one of his favorite hobbies on another unusually hot day. (B1)

NO ENCORE: The spotlight will shine on the Valley again this month, but it will be just a little bit dimmer. Last spring, three local teen-agers captured top prizes at the annual Music Center Spotlight Awards, which go to the most talented young music and dance performers in Southern California. . . . This year, however, only two--Darlene Dirstine of Louisville High and Derek Kwan of Agoura Hills High--advanced to the March 29 finals.

VALLEY RASCALS: We’ve always suspected we had our share of rascals, and now we have the proof. Four Valley youngsters will appear this summer in the “The Little Rascals,” a Universal movie based on the popular series of short films. . . . The local performers are Blake Collins, Jordan Warkol, Blake Ewing and Heather Karasek.
