Baseball owners took a first step toward additional expansion by establishing a committee said adding teams probably was years away.
In a meeting at Scottsdale, Ariz., John Harrington of the Boston Red Sox was picked to head the panel, which won’t make its initial report until this summer. Most owners say they won’t consider expansion until a new labor agreement is reached with the players, making it unlikely new teams would start play until 1998, at the earliest.
Labor negotiator Richard Ravitch reported that negotiations with the union will resume Monday night in Tampa, Fla., after a 13 1/2-month recess.
