OUTLOOK

German thinks his team might have a good chance to show something this year. And you can’t blame the first-year coach for his positive outlook. He has a veteran team returning, including senior and first-team all-league selection Huff at catcher and second-team all-league pick Shadle at third base. German has some legitimate reasons for believing his team can improve upon its fourth-place finish from last year. “We have some good experience returning, which is always a plus,” he said. However, before the band begins to play, German realizes one key element must be present. “Pitching will be the big question mark,” he said. Right now, junior Payne, who started last year, and senior Perez could battle it out for a place in the rotation. “Fundamentals should keep us in every game. But we will need some pitching if we want to go further.”
