OUTLOOK

Ilertsen calls the Freeway League “well balanced,” and said any team could make the playoffs. But don’t be fooled by the humble fifth-year coach. Among the opposition, all agreed that Troy will once again be the team to beat. For starters, the Warriors have a strong contingent of returning starters, including Logan at catcher, Richey at third base, Ruzzi in center field, Downing in right field and all-league pitcher Parmenter. Troy easily took the league title last year and placed three players on the all-league first team and three more on the second. And though Troy stumbled in first round of the Southern Section Division II playoffs, losing to Redondo Beach Redondo Union, 9-7, in extra innings, the fact that Redondo eventually lost to champion Lompoc made the defeat a little easier to take. But this year, Ilertsen said his team might go all the way. Along with the core of returners, he is expecting some help from several newcomers, including outfielder Elliott, pitcher/shortstop Gray and second baseman Brown.
