SWIMMING / PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS : Stanford Wins Easily; UCLA Second

Defending NCAA champion Stanford won five of six events on the final day of the Pacific 10 men’s swimming championships Saturday at the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach to easily outdistance UCLA and USC for the team championship.

Stanford, winning its 13th consecutive conference championship, finished the three-day competition with 962 points. Runner-up UCLA had 605, USC 591.

The only event the Cardinal did not win Saturday was the 200-yard breaststroke, which was won by USC’s Marc Fairon in 1:57.99.

The winners for Stanford were Kevin Radvany (1,650-yard freestyle), Derek Weatherford (200-yard backstroke), Joe Hudepohl (100-yard freestyle), Ray Carey (200-yard butterfly), and the 400-yard freestyle relay team.

Weatherford set a meet record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:42.8, breaking the old mark of 1:43.14 set by Stanford’s Brian Retterer in 1992.
