COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Coach, 3 Others From Pierce Ejected as Glendale Posts 7-6 WSC Victory

Glendale College scored two runs on a disputed infield single in the seventh inning to give the Vaqueros a 7-6 victory over Pierce in a Western State Conference baseball game Saturday at Glendale.

Lance Evans hit a ground ball to pitcher Chris Frith-Smith and eluded an attempted tag and was ruled safe at first. While Pierce argued the call, Brian Warner scored from second base with the winning run.

Four members of the Pierce team were ejected, including Coach Bob Lofrano. Soon after the call, the base umpire left the site and the teams finished the game with one umpire.

Steve Mikesell hit a solo home run in the fifth inning for Glendale (5-6, 3-0 in conference games), giving him five home runs in two games.

Brian Sturges doubled for Pierce (5-7, 1-2).

In other baseball games:

Oxnard 7, Ventura 5--Jess Olivares went three for four with three runs batted in to lead host Oxnard (4-9, 1-2) to its first WSC victory.

A seventh-inning single by Ryan Glass drove in Robert Sanchez with the winning run.

Sophomore right-hander Craig Arnold (2-1) came on in relief in the seventh, pitched out of a jam and shut out Ventura over the final two innings to earn the win.

Robert Fick had two doubles and an RBI for Ventura (10-4, 1-1).

Mission 6-9, East L.A. 1-5--Raymond Rivera (6-0) struck out six and walked one in the first game, and Gary Matthews went three for three with three RBIs on the day in Mission’s sweep of a Southern California Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Jesus Perez was three for four for the day with one RBI, Rob Walley was four for six with two RBIs and Dereck Orneles hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning of the second game for Mission (11-5, 6-2).

Valley 13, Santa Monica 9--Valley (3-9-1, 1-2) pounded out 16 hits and took advantage of eight Santa Monica errors in the WSC game at Valley. The Monarchs scored four runs in the eighth to break a 9-9 tie.

Will Skett was three for four with two runs and two RBIs for Valley. Jorge Dorado added three hits and one RBI.

Cal Lutheran 12-15, Redlands 4-5--Jason Wilson had two doubles and a triple, turning in a six-for-nine performance with five RBIs to lead the host Kingsmen (12-3-1, 11-1) to a sweep in a SCIAC doubleheader.

Marc Weiss (4-0) struck out six and walked three to pick up the victory in the first game.

Scott Sebbo went four for seven on the day with two home runs and a double, and Chris Fick drove in four runs with his seventh and eighth home runs of the season.

Mike Shwartzer, a transfer from San Diego State, added two doubles and a home run, and Jason Becker went four for five in the second game with four RBIs.

SOFTBALL

UC San Diego 8-10, Cal Lutheran 5-11--After losing the first game, the Regals (7-3) came from behind to win the second game of a nonconference doubleheader at Cal Lutheran.

In the second game, Shani Smyth’s three doubles and five RBIs helped Cal Lutheran overcome an 8-5 deficit. Smyth drove in the winning run with a double in the seventh.

Laree Reynolds went three for four and Heidi Stevens added two hits and three RBIs.

Antelope Valley 3, West Valley 1--Heather Meyer hit her second triple of the Bakersfield tournament to drive in Yvette Allen as Antelope Valley improved to 2-0 in tournament play.

Antelope Valley 1, Cypress 0--Heather Meyer followed Friday nights no-hitter with a one hit performance as Antelope Valley won a Bakersfield tournament game.

Tiffany Lainer was three for three as Antelope Valley (8-3) advances to today’s play with an undefeated tournament record.

VOLLEYBALL

CS Northridge d. Pacific, 15-11, 15-8, 15-12--Jason Hughes had 18 kills and three aces to lead the Matadors in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match.

Oliver Heitmann added 15 kills and Craig Hewitt 14. CSUN improved to 8-5, 4-3 in the conference. Pacific is 7-7, 4-6.
