TUESDAY NIGHT AT THE FIGHTS

Share

It’s not glamorous. But plush seating and a smoke-free environment mean nothing to guys in flannel. In fact, a beer and a metal chair are all that’s needed for those who gather one Tuesday night each month at the Tony Longvall Country Club in Reseda. That and a good fight.

The club, also the site of concerts, as hosted professional boxing for 10 years. The venue is typical for a small club: dark and smoky. Cigarette girls sashay through the aisles hawking cigars, cigarettes and snacks. Men cheer on the boxers between gulps of Budweiser or Miller. The fighters prepare for their bouts in a room lit by a single overhead light. It’s boxing in it’s purest form. No Las Vegas glitter here.

The seating capacity for fight night is for just 1,000 spectators, and boxing promoters and fans like that. “The best thing is it’s intimacy,” said Dan Goosen of Ten Goose Boxing, who has booked fights there for 10 years. “When you can promote fights in front of 900 people, it makes it very exciting.”
