COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Anteater Women Advance With Victory Over Titans

Allah-mi Basheer had a career-high 31 points and 13 rebounds as UC Irvine defeated Cal State Fullerton, 73-66, in the opening round of the Big West Conference women’s basketball tournament Tuesday in Las Vegas.

Basheer made 13 of 17 shots from the field. She scored 20 points in the second half.

UC Irvine trailed at the half, 43-36, but the Anteaters went on a 12-3 run to start the second half. UC Irvine took the lead for good, 48-46, on a rebound basket by Basheer.

The Anteaters (5-22) held Fullerton to 23 points in the second half. UC Irvine plays top-seeded and No. 24 Hawaii at 7 tonight.

Jinelle Williams, from Brea-Olinda High, had 13 points and 14 rebounds for UC Irvine.

Fullerton was led by Autumn Hollyfield, who scored 24 points. She made six of nine three-point shots. Shayla Bradshaw and Koko Lahanas added 14 points each for the Titans, who end their season 5-22.

The game marked the Anteaters’ first appearance in the tournament since 1990, and their second tournament victory in 10 years.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Point Loma Nazarene 7, Southern California College 1--Ryan Seidel hit a home run for SCC’s only run. Josh Sewell had two hits for SCC (6-11, 0-3).

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Point Loma Nazarene 3-0, Southern California College 2-3--Beth Howard had eight strikeouts and recorded her fifth consecutive shutout, and Amy Lewis had one hit, scored once and drove in one to lead Southern California College (11-4) in the second game of the doubleheader.

Howard extended her scoreless-innings streak to 35 and improved to 7-1.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

USC 3, UC Irvine 0--Jason Mulholland had 20 kills and Chris Underwood added 17 as the visiting Trojans won, 15-4, 15-2, 15-6.

Chad Milling had 13 kills for UC Irvine (1-13, 0-11). USC is 12-1, 11-1.
