OUTLOOK

The Trojans have their work cut out for them. After finishing fourth last year, they return starters Corrigan and Hullings on the left side of the infield and Wei and Willmott in the outfield. Conlin expects the defense to be fairly solid, but University’s lack of experience on the mound means the Trojans will probably have to rely heavily on Rockness’ handling of the pitchers: O’Connell and juniors Ernesto Medina, Tim Blackburn and Reza Dadrimazi. The loss of All-American catcher Stephan Hagins (.507, 29 runs batted in, 35 runs) in the lineup might be softened if Wei can improve upon last year’s numbers (.380, 25 RBIs, 28 runs). But that’s asking a lot; his teammates probably will have to pick up the slack as University tries to manufacture runs rather than waiting for the big inning. One asset the Trojans always seem to have year in and year out is hard-working players, which should help them get better as the season progresses.
